Mark Shaffer and His dog Bandit, Philanthropist, Community Care Givers, Heroes

Mark Shaffer and His dog Bandit, Philanthropist, Community Care Givers, Heroes – submitted by their friend Gerry Ashley
It’s said that heroes come in all shapes and sizes. Some risk all to free a country from a vicious dictator. Some dedicate their lives to “serve and protect” the people of a city. Still others risk their safety to save others and their property when a house catches fire. My Hero has not done such heroic things as these but he has touched the lives of everyone he meets, giving of himself completely with his only goal pleasing you, asking nothing in return. He is San Diego’s own, “Bandit The Biker Dog.”
Whether it’s visiting the sick in the San Diego Hospice Center or entertaining the children at Children’s Hospital, he’s there to bring comfort. And, over the past 5 years, he has never failed to put a smile on the faces of those he comforts. When the horrendous forest fire in San Diego county last fall caused tens of thousands of people to flee their homes, he was there at Qualcomm stadium to bring comfort to all the evacuees and their children, to take their minds off their plight. Who would have thought a little dog, dressed in Biker gear and riding his own little Harley Davidson could put a smile on the faces of those who didn’t know if they’d have a home to return to?
I must extend this nomination to his master, Mark Shaffer. Mark is the visionary who saw Bandit’s potential to help others and trained him as a therapy dog. A realtor and biker himself, Mark’s heart is matched only by Bandit’s love. To the best of my knowledge, Mark and Bandit have never been paid a dime for all the work they have done to bring awareness to the plight of others in San Diego .
I elevate them from Philanthropists to Heroes for a number of reasons, but here’s one example: In May, Bandit contracted an infection in his right eye. It turned out to be a very aggressive infection and Bandit lost his eye as a result. Barely two weeks later, Bandit attended a fundraiser, in full dress with a new item of biker clothing: An eye patch. Yet there was his ever present smile for all those who stopped to say hello.
If you would like to be inspired by some of Bandit’s (and Mark’s) activities, please check out Bandit’s web site: www.BanditTheBikerDog.com . Warning! The content on this site will make you smile, laugh and, in a few cases, bring tears to your eyes.
